Everything we have accomplished since our founding in 2016 can be directly attributed to the efforts of volunteers like you. Even as we grow to tackle some of the biggest goals in the Crested Butte Climate Action Plan, there will always be a need for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, check out some of the options below and then send us an email at [email protected].
Waste-Free Events Logistician/Consultant
Our Waste-Free Events program takes a lot of volunteer hours, but it’s also one of our most impactful programs. In the first four years of the program, our event partners diverted over 70,000 single-use waste items from the local landfill by using our materials. This is our largest volunteer team.
This volunteer position might be right for you if:

Over time, they have the option to learn about the ins and outs of Waste-Free Events and become a Waste-Free Events consultant. Consultants volunteer their time to help event organizers plan the details of Waste-Free Events from start to finish. This unique service is critical to helping us meet the goals in the Crested Butte Climate Action Plan.

Advocacy Researcher
Although we got our start lobbying the Town of Crested Butte for a plastic bag ban, we took a break from advocacy to focus on programming for a little while. We’re ready to dive back into advocacy now and are looking to build up that program.
This position might be right for you if:
As we rebuild this part of our organization, this is going to be a very important and active volunteer role. We envision this person keeping our team abreast of what is happening locally and nationally with regards to environmental policy and helping us keep track of the most important issues with which we or our followers can engage. This person may help the Webmaster with creating website content, they may help an Eco-tip writer with drafting a policy-related Eco-tip, and they will definitely help our Social Media Maestros with getting regular information out to our followers about how they can engage politically.

Interns
We look forward to continuing a partnership with the Crested Butte Community School in 2021 to offer an internship program for student volunteers. Interns spend about 5-8 hours per week working in a pair to spearhead a project. They will meet regularly with board members and learn about nonprofit governance, sustainability, and project management. In 2021, we expect our interns will be deployed helping with our flagship Waste-Free Events program.
To apply, students will contact our Crested Butte Community School Facilitator (to be announced) at the end of the school year. All candidates will interview with the Sustainable CB board and two candidates will be selected.
In the future, we hope to expand our internship program to a year-round program.

“Sustainable Crested Butte allows the community an avenue to pursue sustainable lives and encourage others to do the same. As an intern in the summer of 2020 I was taught all about nonprofits, the initiatives, grant writing, and how to begin my own projects, and I have taken all those skills with me to continue being an environmental activist. I love the way SCB involves the community through events, internships, and resources for those seeking environmental justice, and I love the way SCB gives the Earth a voice in our town. SCB encouraged me to take action on my passion for keeping our Earth green, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.”
Sophie Truex, Summer 2020 Intern, CB Community School Student
