We got our start as an organization working on Crested Butte’s Plastic Bag Ban back in 2015. In spring of 2019, we decided to tackle another single-use waste item: plastic straws. The plastic straw is the single-use waste item that is used for the shortest amount of time. One recent study estimated 500 million straws are used every single day in the US alone. Getting our local restaurants and bars to eliminate or reduce single-use plastic straws can not only get that type of waste out of our local landfills, but also serve as an inspiration for visitors here to launch similar programs in their home communities. With the plastic bag ban, we took a policy-centric approach to our advocacy. With Straw-Free Gunnison Valley, we’re working directly with local businesses. We have had many Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte businesses join us in this effort. Even if the restaurant you’re visiting isn’t a partner in this effort, you can be the change by requesting they don’t bring you a straw when you place your drink order. Invite the restaurant to consider joining us! |
Straw-Free Businesses
To be considered a straw-free compliant business, businesses must subscribe to “straws available upon request” and offer plastic straw alternatives such as paper or metal straws, or have no straws at their establishment. Businesses that are moving towards being totally straw-free (listed below) are typically getting rid of the current stock they have and plan on not using plastic straws after that point.
